Automatic sprinkler systems are required by International Building Code (IBC) for most new public and commercial buildings depending on occupancy classification and use.
Although not typically required for family homes, automatic sprinkler systems provide valuable life safety and property protection in residential applications. Fire sprinklers are extremely effective in controlling house fires. A sprinkler system can provide critical time for occupants to escape, and will often contain or completely extinguish a fire before the fire department can arrive. Recent statistics in the United States show that civilian death rates and property losses were 89 percent and 55 percent lower, respectively, in home structure fires where sprinklers were present than in those where they were not.
